ROTATING MESSAGE

Welcome to Scotland’s National Hand Hygiene Campaign.  The campaign has now entered its second phase and is due to run until March 2011.  Its main aims are:

  1. To provide the Scottish Government Healthcare Directorate (SGHD) with quarterly hand hygiene audit reports, from July 2008 until January 2009, and then bi-monthly thereafter.
  2. To support NHS Boards as they work to achieve at least 90% Hand Hygiene Compliance by November 2008 through provision of expertise and relevant, approved materials until completion of the project.
  3. To support NHS Boards as they work to achieve a zero tolerance to non-compliance with hand hygiene from January 2009 onwards through provision of expertise and relevant, approved materials until completion of the project.

In addition to this a public media campaign was launched in January 2009, with a professional campaign being launched in March 2009.

This website contains details of both this current phase of the campaign, and also the previous phase of the campaign, which ran from January 2007 until March 2008.  These will be referred to as campaign phases 1 and 2 throughout the website.

Both phases of the campaign have been developed in conjunction with the Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) Task Force within the Scottish Government Health Directorate. The HAI Task Force, led by the Chief Medical Officer, was established in 2003 and is responsible for tackling HAI through a comprehensive, coherent, wide-ranging and multi-disciplinary approach.

In a wider international context, the National Hand Hygiene Campaign has liaised with the World Health Organisation’s first Global Patient Safety Challenge, and their permission for allowing our materials to be based on their 5 key moments is gratefully acknowledged.  Clean Care is Safer Care recognises the key role that hand hygiene plays in tackling healthcare associated infections.
